RULES FOR STAYING AT MY HOUSE: a post by Scout the dog

I recently had to suffer through a week of sharing my house with a dog that came to visit for a week. I decided I had better come up with some official rules in case my mommy decides to dog sit again.

RULES:
1- It is my house.
2- You can play with my toys but each one you pick up becomes my favorite and I will take it from you. (that's how my mom is with books)
3- when I want to play, we will play. When I'm done, back off!
4- All the spots on the furniture are my favorite. I will whine at you until you move.
5- if you don't eat your food immediately, I will steal it.
6- Treats. See rule #5
7-Don't mess with my routine:
  •  mornings are for breakfast, sniffing the yard to see what changed over the night, kisses with my mommy
  • When mommy goes to work, I nap. ALL DAY
  • Mommy comes home, I eat dinner, sniff the yard again. Then mommy plays with me until she has to take her nap. Then I nap with her.
  •  after nap is play time. maybe I will play with you then
8- I get to lick the ice cream bowl when mommy is done, not you!
9- DO NOT come near me when I am snuggling with mommy.
10-DO NOT go near mommy when she is snuggling with me.

Most importantly, remember she is my mommy, not yours. I am the best dog in the world- my mommy told me so!

Reading slump and what I'm doing instead

It's that time of year again. Blogging and reading slump. The blogging slump came first, I do have some books I really liked that I haven't gotten around to reviewing yet. It took all my energy to do a mini-review catch up last week but I am still several reviews behind.
But now I am in a reading slump. I feel like I haven't read anything particularly special in several weeks but it may just be me. I usually read every day but I'm hardly reading at all. I have had these slumps and droughts before so I know it's just temporary. I just want to thank my readers for being patient and not dumping me!

Part of this is weather related, I tend to get sick at this time of year when the temperatures change drastically daily. I need some nice spring weather to make me feel better and stop napping several hours a day!

Here is what I have been up to: I am addicted to watching The Sopranos DVD's from Netflix. I know I'm years behind but I never felt interested in watching when it was on the air. Now I'm HOOKED! I just started season 4 and am having some trouble remembering everyone who has gotten whacked and why. I need a Soprano cheat sheet.
I've also been watching MI5, Seasons 7 and 8 because I just adore Richard Armitage.
I'm looking forward to the new seasons of Nurse Jackie and The United States of Tara returning to Showtime. I'm also excited about the start of a new series, The Borgias.

Anyone else in a slump or distracted by tv? Do we need a support group?

DEAD POLITICIAN'S SOCIETY, DEVIL BONES, WHEN WILL THERE BE GOOD NEWS

mini review catch up time!

Clare Vengel is a first year police officer in Toronto. She is sent undercover at a University as a poli-sci major to find out if any students or teachers are involved in the string of political murders. The narrative moves between Clare, a teacher that is a suspect, and a journalist that is in contact with "Utopia Girl", who may be the killer.
This was not a bad debut, Clare has some definite possibilities if this takes off as a series. She is not a by the book girl and has her own baggage but is rather likable. The plot was interesting and there were plenty of suspects to choose from.

In Charlotte , NC, DR Temperance Brennan has to mysterious corpses to identify, both who seem to be a result of some Satanic killing. Brennan doesn't think so but the local press and a loud mouth politician seem intent on scaring the public.

I have read a few of Reichs' novels and is this is not one of my favorites. Temperance seems off her game and there are too many coincidences. I think I also prefer the ones that take place in Montreal. I did like the discussion between Satanic religions and other religions that are mistaken as Satanic but are not, such as Wicca and Voo-doo and Santeria. The plot was decent, lots of twists and turns. Normally I like when Brennan works with Andrew Ryan in Montreal and he makes an appearance in this book but it seemed gratuitous. I preferred cranky Slidell for this book.

This was my first Kate Atkinson book and I'm not sure what to think. It starts 30 years ago with the random slaughter of a mother and two of her children, the third one got away. Present time, we have Jackson Brody a PI making his third appearance in one of her novels. He is in a train wreck and saved by 16 year old Reggie Chase, the nanny working for Joanna Hunter, the child that escaped death so many years ago. The killer has been releases on parole, but goes missing after the train wreck. Joanna also disappears though her husband denies it. Reggie ropes Jackson into looking into this, though he doesn't believe anything mysterious has happened. Reggie also called the police and DCI Louise Munroe is involved and she happens to be a former lover of Brody's.

I am not sure if I would have liked this book as much if not for the character of Reggie. Reggie is an orphan and adores Joanna and her baby, though never lets on her dire circumstances. Reggie is the character that pulls this whole story together and made it worth reading despite some of the not-too-believable coincidences. She brought heart into the novel and made me care about the rest of the lot. And though this was a mystery, it took half of the book before it started to pick up. The beginning seemed to be all ground work, some not necessary. I don't think I will read the next Brody book because Reggie won't be in it.
