Dewey's 24 Hour Readathon!!! final update

Today is the Fall 2009 Dewey's 24 hour read-a-thon! I have prepared by cleaning my house and doing laundry the day before, grocery shopping is done; no chores to do on Saturday. All my favorite reading spots are prepped with blankets and pillows. I have comfy pj's to wear all day, easy to prepare meals and snacks.
I am going to update this post with my reading progress and confessions of any naps I might take. I'll also update on Twitter.

In case I get grumpy when I get tired, I have 3 DVD's from Netflix of Curb Your Enthusiam to make me laugh.

Here is my list of books that I will be choosing from to read, unless my mood changes and I add to it. I don't expect to read them all, I just want lots of choices:

The Virgin's Daughters by Jeane Westin
New Mercies by Sandra Dallas

A Royal Pain by Rhys Bowen
While My Pretty One Knits by Anne Cabadeo
Confessions of a Jane Austen Addict by Laura Viera Rigler
Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris
Once a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough
A Fatal Waltz by Tasha Alexander
Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink (I read half of this before the read-a-thon)
Ruined: A Ghost Story by Paula Morris

Good luck to all my fellow read-a-thoners!

8:30 am woke up late because ironically was up late last night reading. Also bed was just so comfy. But I'm up, dogs are fed and I'm ready to start with The Virgin's Daughters

#1-11:19 oh dear, read a little over an hour then napped an hour. Not good. Think a wake up shower is in order and some food. Also not going to read in bed. Still with The Virgin's Daughters pg 76. very lame showing for me so far. will pick up speed

#2 12:42 Had mini-meltdown over technical issues w/ map mini-challenge. I am not a morning person unless I am at the office. So ate lunch and watched an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Now ready to jump back in. I'm switching to Prophecy of the Sisters, of which I am 1/2 done with because I started it earlier this week. I'm off!

#3-4:58 Am doing terrible, I am just so tired today. Plus all my reading spots are very comfortable and make me want to sleep.
so far I have read 1/2 of The Virgin's Daughters and am almost finished with Prophecy of the Sisters but I started that half finished. On a normal Saturday I read more than this! Not sure what is going on. I really like my YA books that I have but why are all part of a trilogy? Is that a YA thing? So now I am going to start Ruined, but am going to watch in front of the tv which is my normal thing and I usually get a lot of reading done that way. First I am off to check on some of my blogger friends.

PS- And thanks to all of you who have been cheering me on- you are greatly appreciated!!

#4 Hour 12- I was off to a very slow start this morning (and afternoon) but am doing a little better now. I finished The Virgin's Daughters and Prophecy of the Sisters and am now 1/2 way through A Royal Pain. I decided to hold off on Ruined as I felt I needed a cozy humorous mystery. Also I am much more wide awake than before. I expect I can at least make it until 5am, not sure about 8am. I'm not sure what my next pick will be once I finish my current read but I'll be back to update.

Mid event meme
Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now?  A Royal Pain

2. How many books have you read so far? 2
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? Ruined
4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day? Not realy, just did my errands and cleaning yesterday
5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? no interuptions, just that I am not a morning person and easily get grumpy

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? It's easier for me to read unplanned
7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? Only for me not read-a-thon itself
8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year? Not even attempt to get up at 8 am on a Saturday after crazy work week. Also to have no expectations before 2 in afternoon
9. Are you getting tired yet? Have already had 2 naps, I'm a night owl so starting to hit my stride
10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered? none

#5 1:00AM Just finished A Royal Pain. I'm not sure why it takes me longer to finish the second half of a book than first. I feel like such a slow reader only, 2.5 books completed so far.
I'm going to start Definitely Dead, #6 in Sookie Stackhouse series. I think I will switch on and off with Ruined which I meant to get to earlier.

final update: I crashed at 2:30 last night, normally I am a night owl but I didn't take an evening nap which I often do. But I took 2 naps during the day, which I never do! I got some of Ruined read and some of Definitely Dead. I think I will read those later today

My hat off to others that fared far better than I did, and some had distractions of a family, which I didn't since I lived alone. I will do the next read-a-thon but will have some sort of strategy. But I am really glad I participated in this, it was awesome!

Thanks to everyone who left comments and cheered me on, that meant a lot to me, thank you thank you!!

So glad to have a buddy doing it too! I'll admit I'm a bit overwhelmed...not with the reading, but the updates. I'm not sure how I should do it!

Traditional read-a-thon blessing:

May the bookshelf be there to greet you.
May all the books appeal.
May the fridge be full of tasty snacks;
the words fall soft upon your eyes and until the read-a-thon ends,
may you always hold a book in the palm of your hand.

Good luck today!

My name is Louise, and I am from Copenhagen, Denmark. This is my first visit to your blog, and I am already looking forward to come back when the whole Read-a-Thon busyness has come down ;-)

The Read-a-Thon began for me at 2 PM, since 5 AM Pacific Time means 2 PM Copenhagen Time ;) I hope to be able to hang around for many more hours... I am not reading though, but having a lot of fun working my way through a lot of great blogs to cheer. GO! GO! GO!

Good luck today. Have fun! I'm not reading, but I am cheerleading and hosting a mini challenge tonight. I'm impressed with your prep work, and agree that reading in bed in your PJ's might be dangerous! :) Happy reading!

Hope all is going well now that we are into the 6th hour of the Read-a-Thon :) Still cheering from Copenhagen, Denmark...

I'm definitely saving this post in case I participate in the read-a-thon next time - I'd want to prepare for it the same way! And you're allowed to nap. :) Happy reading!

Good idea to switch books if the first one isn't grabbing your interest, as you have a great selection to choosed from.

Good luck and have fun!

You are doing great. I got a little thrown off schedule this am, but I’m back on track now. Keep up the good work!

I will surely need a nap a bit later unless, I walk around the house constantly until I fall over from exhaustion...LOL

Keep it up! Great job.

Hey girl! I made it back last hour from the book sale (very lucrative, btw!). I finished 206 Bones, but I had already started that one. I've started Arch Enemy. I think night will be better for me too. I'm a night owl! I hope I get to Prophecy too!

I'm rooting for you =o) Hang in there!

Hang in there! I'm sorry you didn't have a smooth start to your day. I ended up sleeping for most of the morning and am now into my eighth hour.

I haven't done any of the mini-challenges yet, and I'm not sure that I will since I got such a late start. I really want to make up some ground first. Maybe later this evening, when I feel I need a break from reading.

We're coming up on the final quarter! You've done great so far-see it through to the end! You can do it!

Lisa said...

I could not get that map mini-challenge to work either! I'll admit I did give up pretty quickly because a)I wasn't in the mood for frustration and b) I already wasn't getting enough actual reading done to be spending loads of time with mini-challenges. Can you believe how much some people are getting read?

You're doing a wonderful job! Keep it up :D

Hey girl! Just checking in. I'm wide awake, but my reading is slow going. My family didn't much cooperate. Big surprise!

I'm still rooting for you!

Krista said...

Wow! You are doing wonderful!

You did fabulous! I'm laughing, because I also only made it to 2:30am, and I can normally stay up much later that when reading a good book. Don't you hate it when that happens?? :)

Your blog is definitely on my watch list. So glad that I found your blog (though I feel like it's familiar to me, so maybe it is a rediscovery?) through RaT!
